Question Sprocket Nuts

Hi, does anyone else have trouble tightening the nuts on the rear sprocket carrier to the correct torque setting? I remember when i changed the chain and sprockets on my old GS500 one of the bolts cross threaded due to the large torque setting, and when we changed the rear sprocket on my friends race bike (GSXR600) the nuts will only go upto about 65nm (before cross threading (manual says 93nm!) How do you find the best method of final tightening?

I don't use the torque wrench.

I put them in using socket and ratchet. I also use locktite blue. Haven't had a nut come loose on me so far.

It's 60nm for the curvy... Don;t have a pointy manual but I'd imagine it'd be similiar, they're the same overall design if not the same part.

were you using aluninium nuts with the steel thread insert or standard ones, both stainless steel and the ally ones will not torque up the same as the oem ones - less tensile strength. Don't ask me about Ti though as I am too tight to splaash out on those.

We used OEM ones over the weekend, we were reusing the original ones despite the manual saying to always replace them. The guys in the paddock said just to use loctite to compensate for the loss of the self sealing ability.

The main problem is the final torqing. To get to such a high torque setting requires the use of a long torue wrench which, on such a small nut, tends to wonder under pressure rather than tightening square on. Do you guys torque up with the wheel or sprocket carrier loose or with the wheel mounted to the bike?

Not being funny but are you sure you've got the figures right? Just checked the manuals I have access to, and the curvy and pointy SV, GSXR SRAD and Bandit 12 all call for 60nm on those bolts.

same here, suzi bolts are ****e so do it by feel.

Concidering the almost impossibillity of the task do you reckon 60nm is enough as the bike this relates to is my friends race bike so i takes a tiny bit more punishment than its road going equivalent....
