just thinking out loud here but would the check valve in the stanchion not force the oil in the outer tube in the wrong direction for the valving as damper rod and cartridge forks work in reverse to each other. cartridge forces oil down and out the bottom into the outer tube where damper forces oil from the outer tube via the bottom and into the damper. suppose they could have reversed the valving to work with the check valve.

Or just made the rod a bit smaller than the damper rod so oil can flow past freely.
