Even Dell is better than PC world, but at a pinch if its the best you have.

You could learn to build your own, I have built all my PC's, have yet to buy one.

Good luck!

As above, don't go to PC World. You'll only pay over the odds & have a 5year warranty that's barely worth the paper it's written on.

If you have to buy from a shop, use a small local one. But also, if you're buying a computer, don't listen to the sales folks, they'll only try to sell you a top spec gaming machine to be used as a typewriter.

At the end of the day, it's about buying something that will suit your requirements, with enough room for expansion later on.

Not everyone needs, or wants, a top spec machine, so if you dont, don't pay the top prices!

Basically, go for the fastest processor, biggest hard-drive and most RAM that you can afford.

Get Windows XP Pro is you can.

If all you are planning to do is surf the 'net and send emails that you don't need a top-spec machine.

what do you want to do with it ?

play games = expensive

surf the internet, send emails , do a bit of word processing & spreadsheet work

= get the cheapest you can find as they're all fast enough these days

something in between if you're going to do lots of image editing, or video encoding (which you'll need to do if copying DVDs)

try and get at least a 17" display, 15" are a bit hard on the eyes after a while

ram - 512MB should be OK

hard disk, 80GB should be plenty to start with

do you want a desktop or laptop - laptops are generally more expensive, but easier if you've got space issues or need move it about

anything else can easily be upgraded/added on once you've got the beastie

Setting it up is easy, switch in on and away you go, answer the questions it asks you, and you get a decent set of recovery disks!

I would recomend this one as a techy:

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...hs1&l=en&s=dhs

Its a nice duo core system, its not bad plus leaves you room to expand later, and its not too heavy on the bank balance.

Cheers
