Question Electrical gurus - help required.

Hi Guys, I've been a bit distracted for a couple of years and didn't lay my SV650S K1 up properly. I just plugged in the Oxymiser to look after the battery. I paid the price and had carbs to overhaul. While I was there I checked the valve clearances and put it all back together. Idiot.
My issue is that when I first tried to start the bike it would not turn over. Dead. First thought : kill switch - it was set to run. Second thought - is it in gear with the propstand down - no. In desperation I pulled in the clutch and the starter engaged fine. Now I don't get what can be wrong - I can hear the relay under the seat clicking when I turn on the ignition, put it in gear and work the propstand and the neutral light works with the gear Lever OK too.
What else can be stopping it starting without me pulling in the clutch?
The bike lives in a nice dry garage.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Bibio, long time no speak. Thanks for replying.
Whaaaat? You sure? If so, it is the only bike I've ever had that does that! My BMW F800GT doesn't for example. I see yours is a pointy - is it different on that? You've got me worried now!

OMG. I'm gonna have to get tested for dimentia. Maybe that's what two years of back breaking work on a derelict house have done to me!!!

Strange, on my bike that doesn't require the clutch pulled in. I still do it.
