TBH I've had similar problems with road cranksets, the tensioning bolt thingy are different diameters and lengths. Unfortunately all my cranksets are road cranksets, so no use to you, but I'll see if I've got any tensioner thingys which are 22mm. I have a feeling that XT and Dura Ace share similar dimensions. St Johns Street cycles would be my first port of call for the tension thingy.

On the back of the crank arm should be the model or part number, so you can use that to ascertain the model crank you have

Then you can search for a suitable crank arm fixing bolt as its called

The crank arm should butt up to the bottom bracket bearing without using the crank arm fixing bolt, it should just slide on to the splines on the spindle.

The crank arm fixing bolt is plastic and just puts tension onto the bearings, then do up the pinch bolts

Pleased Mav can help you Bib, to be honest I am totally lost, and on a personal note as a choice I would not touch Hollowtech with a barge pole (I did read that the crank arms themselves can de-laminate. Not all from the Land of the Rising Sun is good )
St Johns bike shop is a good one, I agree with that - good luck

update. its hollowtech II Mk1. the main nut for the II fits but the difference is that the mk1 does not have the hole for the updated crank arm washer/locking pin. quest is over lol. thanks for all your help.

i got an alloy bolt and its all done and working great. the lad is well chuffed as he now has his bike back just in time for starting school again.
