Default Starter Motor

Hey All,

Just wanted to know if anyone knows of a good place to pick up a starter motor for a K6. Doesn't seem like many places have them anymore. Re-cond is fine just not sure if I trust a fleabay special.

Cheers

Cant remember where I saw a mention of it but does removing the starter motor dump the oil? Will be a pain as I've just changed it.

Hi there, just swapped mine for a refurbed one, and it didn't dump the oil, just a few drips.

It was an eBay cheapy, with a repair kit and an hour of cleaning / fitting. Was a whole lot cheaper than buying a new one!

How are they to clean? been thinking of taking mine apart but worried about ****ing it up as I haven't done anything like that before.
Just had RAC out to get it going then the most terrifying ride of my life from Manc to Bury in the snow xD

Very straightforward, once you've got the cable off!
The cable connection on mine was so corroded I had to take a hacksaw to it, being careful not to cut through the ring connector, of course.
There's several pages on it in the Haynes manual, but basically there's two bolts holding the motor together. Take these out, then separate from the gear end. Make sure to note where the washers come from as there several on each end of the motor shaft, and some are insulating.
Fitting the repair kit (basically a new set of carbon brushes and cable mounting bolt) is just pop them in where the old ones come out of, then put it all back together.
Like you I was worried I might wreck it but, as with most things, if you work through it carefully and don't try cutting corners you should be okay.
Edit: also make note of the alignment marks when you separate the motor so it goes back together the same way.

Doing this has been added to my winter jobs. As long as it doesnt dump too much oil out my k3 im sorted.
