Default Language Lessons

Seeing as The Border Patrol are going to be spending a lot of time crossing into each others territories, and seeing as Luckypants is already bi-lingual, maybe he would like to give the English-speaking-only members a few pointers to make their trips to Wales more fun.

How about telling us how to say a few simple things in Welsh, such as

Hello

Goodbye

Thank You

Slow down you bloody lunatic

That kind of thing

One word we should avoid, Araf! Isn't that 'slow'?

Hmm not always as simple as you'd think!

Hello has many forms, but here's two simple ones that basically mean 'how are you?'

Sut Dach Chi? pronounced Sit Dac key (unless you can make the gargling sound) This is the polite form of how are you, to be used when addressing someone older or whom you respect. Older Welsh women will still use this form of address to thier husbands, so you get the picture.

Sut wyt ti? pronounced Sit oowit tea. Used with someone you are friendly with, children.

A simple Hylo! in a thick Welsh accent also works.

Goobye - Hwyl! (Who-will)

Thank you - Diolch (D-ol-k) again if you can do the gargling sound at the end, better!

Slow down you fool! - Arafwch, fol gwirion! usually followed by something the u-rating forbids. pronounced R-arf-ook, fol gwi-r-ion.

Yep is 'slow' and is usually painted on the road before a 90 degree bend! Ignore at your peril.
