Re: Considering putting stock muffler back on :-s
May as well stick the stock can back on. Ridiculous prices.

Re: Considering putting stock muffler back on :-s
If you're insurance asks if there are any performance modifications, as for some this is all that they are interested in, then the answer no. Yes you have changed the exhaust can but purely for aesthetic reasons. You've not conducted a before and after dyno run have you? No? Therefore not a performance modification.
Additionally I've argued this with insurers before regarding the cost of OEM vs Aftermarket. They will put it back to stock if required and thus write the bike off. However if there is a can on there they simply won't cover the can, for me not an issue. |

Re: Considering putting stock muffler back on :-s
I'm pretty sure others have argued to have aftermarket cans instead of stock when insurance are fixing it to keep it within a reasonable price and stop it being written off.
If you can't see a manufacturer, pop a photo up on here. The Org collective should give you a good idea of where to try.

By the time you are talking an excess that large on an ageing SV, then I would also be considering 3rd Party Fire & Theft cover, which always used to be far cheaper, although I understand not always the case now.

I haven't thought about 3rd party f&t. I guess as an inexperienced rider I'm scared of binning it with noone around!

Re: Considering putting stock muffler back on :-s
Just arrange separate breakdown cover. I use Autoaid which covers me on the bikes or in the car.
Obviously I've got fully comp on my year old SV, but I often rode alone with TPF&T cover on bikes in the past (and no mobile phone either ) but always had breakdown cover.

Re: Considering putting stock muffler back on :-s
To answer your question about fuel efficiency, you may see an improvement with the stock can, you may not.
There's only one way to find out An exhaust system should always be considered an important part of the overall engine design. Some Car and motorcycle manufacturers spend alot of money designing O.E. systems for optimum scavenging of the exhaust gases (essentially a well designed exhaust can ensure near complete removal of the exhaust gases to enable near complete cylinder re-filling with fresh air and fuel, making for a more efficient engine). Alot of that work can be quickly undone with a cheap aftermarket exhaust. Of course, if you could give us an idea of your current average MPG, that might help. (E.g. If you're getting 40mpg, I'd definitely try the stock can ) EDIT - that's a relief, managed to get through both of those replies without mentioning eBay once........

Re: Considering putting stock muffler back on :-s
I think at the moment, depending on how liberal I'm being with the throttle, I am getting about 120 ish miles to a tank.

I have a cheap Chinaprovich Slip-on on my Stock 1999 Curvy.Rider Weight 14 stone.Quite speedy riding when permitted
Last fuel check I got 54 mpg and my low fuel warning usually doesn't come on until between 150/160 miles. HTH

Re: Considering putting stock muffler back on :-s
As above, 120 miles to a tank sounds low unless you spend all your time above 100mph.
Of course there are plenty of other things that will affect mpg (dirty air filter, throttle body sync., worn plugs, valve clearances, even chain lubrication)
