In praise of sticky string
Went to the garage yesterday evening to lube the chain and found the rear tyre completely flat. B*gg*r!
Found the problem, a small nail in a tread groove. I am due a new rear tyre anyway (the factory Dunlop Qualifier is down to the wear indicators after less than 5,000 miles from new, so don't ever buy them, Avon Storm 3D rears lasted me 10K miles on my previous K6) but wanted to get a couple of rides in over the weekend, and no local bikes shops were open to get a plug done. Then I remembered I'd ordered a sticky string kit a few years ago but never used it. Did the repair (first time I've done one - it was dead easy), pumped up the tyre, left it overnight, checked pressure this morning and still all good. Nice 150-miles ride later, still all good. New tyre ordered for fitting next week too, so all's well |

Re: In praise of sticky string
My original rear tyre lasted about 3,600 miles till it got a screw in it at which point it was a ball hair away from the wear indicators.
They are utter crap. Replacement PR4 done almost double that and still got heaps left. |

Re: In praise of sticky string
You'd think they'd give decent grip considering they wear so quickly, but the Dunlops always felt a bit squirmy to me. I've never felt truly confident on them.

Re: In praise of sticky string
If you had me ride identical motorcycles back to back with different tyres on and didn't tell me which tyre was on I don't think I could tell the difference.
So long as tyre is black, circular, cheap and lasts ages it'll do me. I'm convinced that people's perception is heavily influenced by the brand and reputation of a tyre. Case in point IRC scooter tyres get slated as being "lethal in the wet" I've never had the slightest problem with them. |

Re: In praise of sticky string
Cheng Shin tyres that were on my old 125 were worlds apart from the Michelin Citys that replaced them. I think you'd tell the difference if you rode them back to back.

Re: In praise of sticky string
I've yet to have the pleasure of riding on Cheng Shin tyres.
