Engine stops when selecting a gear
Hi, I've had this twice now, luckily the first time I had arrived at work and this time literally arrived at home.
When selecting first or second from neutral with the clutch in the engine stops itself. Starts straight back up in neutral then will stop as soon as a gear is selected. It's not the tickover being too low, I tried holding revs at 4k then selecting a gear, it somehow electronically kills the engine. The bikes a 05 sv650s with full race exhaust and the snorkel from the air-filter removed. The previous owner had the fuelling checked when the exhaust went on and said it didn't need any changing. After leaving it for a while it works again. Any ideas? I'd hate this to happen at a junction or on the move. |

Re: Engine stops when selecting a gear
Sounds like it could be a sticking side stand switch to me. The SV will let you run the bike on the sidestand but has a cut out to prevent you riding off with the stand still down i.e. as soon as you put it in gear.
The switch is quite obvious. If it cuts out again then check that the plunger isn't stuck in. If it is then pull it out and you should be able to ride. Then lubricate at the next opportunity. HTH.

Re: Engine stops when selecting a gear
Maybe the kill switch on the side stand is sticking, i've had this happen before but not on the SV.

Re: Engine stops when selecting a gear
I'd replace the switch or relay, whichever is faulty- WD40'll probably sort it but it might just do it again in a month

Re: Engine stops when selecting a gear
Could also be the clutch out of adjustment. Mine does it every morning. A little rev just beofre you engage the gears will tell you if its this or the sidestand switch.
I have a knackered clutch for some reason, so no ammount of adjustment stops it. |
