Default Something cheap, reliable and fun?

Can anyone think of something that fits the bill as my sv is now sold.

Needs to be quite cheap though unless something drastic happens, like a lottery win etc.

I'm not keen on naked bike, although would consider a streetfighter type bike, also like supermoto style bikes, but lack of budget might dictate otherwise.

Must be able to commute like my beautiful SV does - 13 miles each way, all weathers and mainly traffic.

Any ideas would be great.

For 13 miles I'd get nothing bigger than a 500. You got another bike in the pipeline?

If you want cheap and not really old its going to be naked really - something like an ER-5 or CB500 - what about an old steely framed CBR600?

DR-Z400SM could be just the right bike for traffic in town, wouldn't take it anywhere near a motorway and would make a point to avoid long stretches on national limits but in town the high seating position, punchy low down torque, relatively light weight and wide bars make it a very nippy bike, i guarantee you'll arrive at work with a smile, but take no responsibility for you getting into trouble for doing wheelies/stoppies/skids or anything else the bike makes you do...

plus, the engine is absolutely bullet proof, simple to work on with sensible service intervals, and if you drop it you can pick it up and keep going (fit axle sliders and proper metal handguards, no plastic crap ,and you won't have to replace anything)

as for price it depends on how cheap is cheap...

For a road based bike things like the older 600's (supersport and naked) and the 500's are good, couriers use them and love them.

Older SS 600's what sort of thing should I look for, I really don't want a GS500 type thing although budget may dictate this is exacly what I get.

Don't want it to be a money pit either!
