Lydden 25th May
Anyone going?
Also, do you think i should replace the front tyre before or after the track day? Last edited by Popy Fresco; 14-05-13 at 11:33 AM. |

Re: Lydden 25th May
Hoping to make the afternoon. Working nights unfortunately. Haven't managed to get out yet this year so just looking for a few laps to remind myself what to do....
ps: tread depth in the middle of the front tyre isn't so much of an issue providing it's dry, but the profile is. Didn't look to bad from the photo but if the tread is stepped worth replacing. What's the rear one like? Last edited by Red Herring; 14-05-13 at 11:37 AM. Reason: needed finishing! |

Re: Lydden 25th May
Not going, but in answer to your other question, without viewing your tyre it's hard to say, Lydden is a small twisty circuit, so the bike isn't upright much of the time, previously I've used a marginal rear tyre as the wear was mostly on the central core of the tread from road use, fronts are slightly different as they tend to wear on the sides even on road used, if you have any feathering on the sides (last third of tread on either side); I'd change it before as that'll be the bit you're using on the track as well.
Cheers Mark

Re: Lydden 25th May
Don't ride around Lydden (or any track for that matter) with a squared off rear tyre. More than one person has come to grief doing so (including at least one fatal that I witnessed). As the tyre rolls across the pointed bit of the profile as it does coming out of Chessons it has a nasty habit of letting go, and given you are at the top end of third gear at this point it isn't nice. Profile is far more important than tread depth.

I'll see you there Red, i'm on a black 650s
I think the thread is not stepped. Rear tyre it's fine, i'll upload some photos later on. Rictus, not sure what do you mean by 'feathering' Thanks guys |

Re: Lydden 25th May
Feathering is where the blocks wear unevenly, as they always do on front tyres. The front outside edge of a block will always wear more than the back inside edge. Easiest way to spot it is to ride along, stand up and lean forward looking down at the rolling profile of your tyre. You will see a distinct "step" in the tread.

Re: Lydden 25th May
Great afternoon at Lydden Hill. I got there just before lunch having had some kip after working nights last night and there was plenty of room in the fast group, but they did charge my son and I £80 each for four sessions (15 minutes) which miffed me slightly given a whole day is only £99. I know they want people to book a whole day but not everybody can and surely it's better to have some turn up in the afternoon and swell your coffers then put them off all together, especially as the only group that looked even remotely close to being full was the novice one (told you Lydden is popular with beginners). Food for thought.
