SV650 Valve Clearances - how easy to adjust?

Has anyone had experience of checking/adjusting the SV650 valve clearances?

I'm thinking of trying this but would like to know if it's within the scope of a reasonable home mechanic or would it be best taken to a dealer?

Checking is a simple job and can be done at home.

lift tank,
remove airbox
remove carbs
both rocker covers
remove timing inspection plug (nearside top of rotor cover)
remove rotor centre bolt cover.

, as to adjusting them, well because it's "bucket & shims" it's a little more complex, so I'd suggest getting the garage to do it.

I would say on the 4 different engines I've checked this on none have needed adjustment, some as high as 60,000 miles.

I'd check them yourself, if they are out then get it done.

would you like to enlighten us with the way you check the valve clearances, without removing airbox and carbs?

is this something special only australian SV's come with?

I'm always willing the learn something new, and I can't see how?

You're not suggesting dropping the engine are you? just to check the valves?

Could you add something positive about your process for doing this, I follow the manual, but if your way is easier and as good, I'm all for it.

Although you could possibly, disconnect the rad (to get to the front one), and remove the tank (to get to the rear one) you can get to both, by just moving the rad (as per front plug check) and loads of space to do the rear without the airbox& carbs in place, it takes all of 10 minutes or so.

If you want to be able to see what you are doing,and have room to work, you've got to, I thought bsam20 was after the easiest way?

Thanks everyone, you've given me the confidence to have a go.

But I'm a bit confused because the online manual doesn't say to remove the carbs. I guess you're saying that it's not much trouble to take them off and it gives a lot more room to work?

I was talking to the Ozzie guy Mark, just in case you misunderstood my post. I have met you and read enough of your posts to trust that what you say mechanically about sv's tends to be right. Now where are those new fork springs?
