Default Its the rectifier i think

ive got a 2001 650s.
have had hot grips added and a datatool alarm. other than that its stock.

right, the problem.

went to start the bike, the battery isnt flat, far from it. the alarm will turn on and off and the rest of the electrics are working fine.

when i push the starter, there is the sound of a relay rapidly switching under the seat to the far right.

the speedo needle waves around and the tacho needle does the same thing, even thought the engine is turning over.

the starter motor isnt turning the engine at all.

i reckon the rectifier has broke and is supplying the wrong voltage hence the needles waving around.

could someone confirm this or perhaps give there personal opinion.

thanks ppl.

the battery is flat, not enough juice to crank over the engine.

Sid Squid, your explanation makes perfect sense.

But can this explain the speedo and tacho waving wildly.

the speedo goes from 0mph to 150 mph, and the tacho goes up and down through the full rev range.

Am going to take the battery out and charge it now, so should know by tomorrow at the latest.

Thanks ppl.

yep, did the same on Spidys SV when the battery was nearly dead.

remember that the rectifier will only do anything when the bike is running, it plays no role in the bike actualy starting (well not on the SV anyway) AFAIK. Once the bike is started the gen supplies high AC voltage to the rectifier, which rectifies the AC to DC and charges up the battery which then also supplies power to all the electrical components in the bike. The SV rectifier has only 5 wires, 3 for the connection to the alternator then 2 for the battery, some GSXRs and other bikes have 7, diffrence being that there are two sets of output wires, possably one set for the battery and the other for electrics of the bike, that im not sure.

put a multi-metre across the terminals and its low, got the battery on a trickle charge now.

my fault, left it unstarted for more than a month.

Thought it mite be the rectifier as i had a faulty rectifier before and that messes with the tacho and speedo just like it did the other day.

thought it mite be back to plague me.

hate the electrical end of bikes

its been on for hours, and it doesnt seem to be gettin any better.

is it an overnight job or wat?
