Oil change opinions please
Hi all,
I changed the oil and filter a week or so ago. The oil is now very black and looks like it is due for a change again. Due to the weather I have only done about 300 miles since the change. The drain plug and filter were off for about an hour and it was on level ground. I used a genuine Suzuki filter and Putoline DX4 oil. I do not know when the oil was changed before this but I do know that the bike has only covered around 1,300 miles since 2006 so it would not surprise me if it had not been done for a while!! The bike starts and runs fine. No polls here but I am tempted to change the oil again. Would you agree or not? If you agree would you use some kind of flush first? Would you also change the filter again? Cheers. |

Re: Oil change opinions please
No, there's always going to be some oil left in the heads and galleries, so it'll change the colour of the new oil quickly.
I'd be more concerned if it was using oil, or black smoke was coming out of the exhaust. IMHO its normal, so don't bother changing the oil & filter until the next service

Re: Oil change opinions please
I changed my oil & filter for some that was red (can't remember the name of it) and surprisingly mine's still red after 1000 miles or so after the change... so it sounds like we're poles apart.

Re: Oil change opinions please
Agreed. My nice red oil I put in my bike has gone black by the time I get home from work after a fresh oil change. Just make sure you do regular oil changes at the correct times as per normal servicing schedule.

Re: Oil change opinions please
think it's more about the oil being abused over a long period of time (molecular structure/detergents being burned off etc) rather than the colour of it...

Re: Oil change opinions please
If Id just spent £20 on some new oil Id want my moneys worth out of it.The best advice with oil is to regularly check the level in the sight glass.

Cheers guys. I know it sounds stupid but didn't know if it needed a flush.
I agree with this but cheaper that a big bang between my legs. |
