Thinking of getting a vw transporter
My car is getting too small to haul all my tools around in now and sometimes i could do with being able to collect sheets of ply etc so im convinced i need a t5 transporter. My budget isnt the best probably max 7k, tempted by a 2.5 130ps but heard the 1.9 102ps is more reliable and certainly more plentiful.
Does anyone have any input/experience as id probably be looking at 100k plus vans? |

Re: Thinking of getting a vw transporter
I wouldn't personally.
Don't like them, seen too many have engine failures (oil control rings or turbos) 7k budget look at Renault / Vaughan/ Nissan, traffic or vivaro and the Nissan the exactly the same van. Sent from my E2303 using Tapatalk

The resale price on those vans plummets though where as vws hold their price well.

Re: Thinking of getting a vw transporter
I would have one of those 1.9 TDI PD engines no problem. Know lots of people running them on bio with no issues. VAGCOM VCDS easily available for a few quid so you can do all your own diagnostics if needed.
Don't know a lot about the 2.5 version. Wouldn't have a vivaro given, camchains, turbos.... piece of sh...

Re: Thinking of getting a vw transporter
Yeah Chris from what ive read the 1.9 85bhp and 102bhp versions are fairly bullet proof but the 2.5 although geared cam has a tendency crap porous heads in the early models and for eating camshafts and more expensive to repair.
Like the idea of a 5 cylinder 130bhp lump though, that said the 102s can easily be remapped to near that and still retain good reliability. |

Re: Thinking of getting a vw transporter
I'm the owner of a 1.9 85 bhp (remaped) since april and I'm quite happy with it. The only problem has been a leak in the intercooler, 430£, and i've don circa 7k miles.
Had similar budget as you and the van had 105k miles when i bought it, it is a tight budget if you want something decent but if you are patient I'm sure you'll find it. Let me know if you have any questions i can help you with

Re: Thinking of getting a vw transporter
I intend using it as a van but adding 2 to 3 rear seats eventually. Better to use it as a van than my car that is getting wrecked.
I missed out on a 2.5 130 on 106k for £5000 in tidy condition this weekend |

Re: Thinking of getting a vw transporter
I can't complain, it does easily 70+ mph on the highway (me + the missus + the track bike + camping gear); I haven't felt lack of power at all (considering is a van and not a sports bike...)
