Bad starting, poor running, 2000 Curvy.
Hello there
well my SV has never ran all that great but to be perfectly hoenst with you i put it down to poor riding coniditons in the winter. however better weather didnt affect a thing theres carbon deposit on the plugs, a very weak idle, poor starting and severe lack of power, all which leads to some sort of misfire, im guessing? now the odd thing is i replaced the plugs and it ran like a dream for about a week. since then i have cleaned the plugs, onyl to find the same deposit, and once brushed down it fires again but its far from perfect ive done an oil change, changed the air filter, plugs and overhauled the carbs. I've reason to believe its a dodgey mixture but its confusing as to why the problem wouldnt of been evident from the very start, or when i changed my plugs. the ht cables have also been cahnged to eliminate the chance of arcing. i have been advised about the fuel pump but im not too knowledgeable on the symptoms of one that isnt in operation. ANY HELP APPRECIATED! kind regards, |

Re: EXPERT ADVICE PLEASE! Sv650s 2000 Curvy
Dodgy mixture would definately make sense. And if in any doubt about fuelling, the best thing to do is pop it on a dyno, a fuel run isn't usually expensive. The operator will also generally be a pretty skilled mechanic so you might get some fault diagnosis for free...
There's some basic things to check first, which can easily go wrong over time- I'd be checking the vacuum hoses, and also making sure that the carbs are firmly and properly attached to the engine, and the airbox to the carbs, and the foam under the tank is secure- these can all cause air starvation (if the airbox is riding high, it gets close to the tank base, which of course restricts the air).

the choke operation is fine as far as i can see, i checked it when i was overhauling the carbs,
so you mean, the fule tank could be blocking the air filter which causes air starvation? |

There is a layer of foam that is on the underside of the tank. Just check to see that it hasn't come loose. It can hang down and cover the hole on the top of the air filter.
It's only there for noise reduction so if its loose just take it off. |

Re: EXPERT ADVICE PLEASE! Sv650s 2000 Curvy
foam is fine!
not sure how to knwo whether the airbox is high, its seated properly but it is depressed a little more when the tank is on top of it. could it be anything electrical? such as degraded loom/resistance from teh alarm possibly? im just reluctant to have a look at the pilot micture screw purely because logically i dunno why it wouldve changed. would a coil replacement be in order? |

The air box should not depress further when the tank is lowered.
Check that the carbs are correctly seated and the the airbox rubbers are fitted correctly. They should have a flap all the way around that should be inside the airbox. Should be like this: Last edited by Jester666; 29-06-08 at 10:18 AM. |
