Worrying rattle

Hi guys,

I've noticed a rattling coming from I think one of the cylinders. I haven't had a chance to check it properly, but listening to the bike it's definitely coming from the engine and sounds like the rear cylinder.

She's close to the 42K miles mark so I'm wondering if there's something specific I should be looking for when I check the bike over . . Also it the sound is more noticeable when the revs are high, for example when the choke is on . . I don't notice it so much when riding because I always have ear plugs in.

Cam chain tensioner rattling?? Known problem and it seems the rear cylinder is always affected first, must be because it's the hardest one to get to.

Thanks for the reply . . I was thinking cam chain earlier so it's good to have some second opinion on it . . what's the job like to do these, and is there anything I should look for with regards to replacing them?

Camchains are a right tw*t to replace. You have to take the barrel off if you want to do it without splitting the chain, which means new head gasket.

There is a subtle difference in the rattle of a tensioner and chain, though just to make your day, the rear tensioners don't usually rattle because they fill up with oil. The front ones point downhill and drain out so you hear the rattle. That rattle is OK though.

Take tank off, remove head cover and chain cover plate... feel if there is any slack in chain.

Thanks for the heads up Chris, do you need a specific tool for tightening the cam chains? Hopefully they won't need replacing though, what normally dictates the need to change them?

Wear.

You can't tighten the cam chains, the tensioner is automatic.

It's a process of elimination, if there is slack in chain then replace tensioner or swap them over and see if it tightens it. If there is still slack then you must take it apart further to see if there is problem with guides.

P.S don't know why people whinge about rear CCT, they are dead easy. Take rearset off and you can get a perfectly straight shot at it with a 1/4 drive allen socket.

That would be me making life difficult for myself Chris. A fresh perspective can make all the difference. Your comment above has taught me something new so I'll know what to look out for in the future.

Is it any pointy model CCT thats a ideal replacement for the curvy?
