Caliper overhaul, where exactly to grease?
Hello all,
I know this question has been asked before so I feel like I'm treaded a well trodden path here, but I've searched through threads can't find a specific answer to my question. I'll soon be overhauling the calipers on my pointy sv. I've got new seals, bleed nipples (they've been weeping, which is what's prompted the overhaul) and pads on order, plus some red rubber grease (I told you I searched through some threads...). The question I have is on the exact location of where I apply the rrg. I've read that it's applied to the seals.. is this on both sides of all the seals? I.e. both the side facing into the groove in the caliper and the side that would have the piston sliding past it? Do I apply any to the piston itself too? Is there anything else I should be greasing? When I've done pads before I've always put copper grease on the back of the pads and on the sliding pin, just wondered if I was missing anything. Also, whilst we're here... what does everyone recommend for cleaning the pistons should they need it? |

Red rubber grease on the pistons & seals
A thin smear of coper grease on the back of the pads, but not on any rubber seals or gaiters

Great thanks. How much rrg needs applying to the pistons and seals? Just a smear or?

Just a smear is fine, also make sure you use some RRG on the sliding pins.
Normal or copper grease should not be used on the sliding pins as it can be absorbed by the rubber boots which swell and lead to sticking calipers. Jambo

Ahh will keep that in mind, thank you. Not sure where i got the copper grease for sliding pins idea from, maybe the same place that suggested brake fluid for the seals the first time I serviced the calipers... hmm.
I assume just general brake cleaner for cleaning components? Or is there some other magic wonder stuff out there I could get? |

do you have a dishwasher...
make sure that the recesses that the seals fit into are sparkling clean. |

No dishwasher unfortunately! Brake cleaner and cotton bud job?

Re: Caliper overhaul, where exactly to grease?
for the recesses i use a brass circular brush on the end of a dremmel at slow speed with a tiny bit of autosol then clean out with brake cleaner and rag.

Times like these, wish I had a dremmel...
