Changing fork Springs and Butter bolts
So I used a 14 mm socket to unscrew the front brake caliper bolts. The top bolt was seized in tight and the socket took the corners off and the bolt is still tight in. Do impact sockets come with hex flats? Apart from drilling the bolt out, which I don't want to do, using a socket with 6 flats as opposed to a corner gripping socket seems the only option open to me.
Any? Just gonna whip into Halfrauds to see what they got. John |

I would allways uses a size flat socket if I was you for those parts, and a torque wrench might be a idea so it don't get overy tightend again.

Re: Changing fork Springs and Butter bolts
Update: Just got a couple of surface gripping sockets from Halfords
. AT first I had the normal depth ones out of the cabinet, marked as 'surface gripping' but guess what? Yep 18 pointers. So I had to get the deep sockets. Got 13 and 14 mm since these seem to be the most used. Just got home and got the bolt out no problema! It was locked tight with cement though Anyway thanks Grinchy old bean. Can get on with this 15 minute fork out now. |

12mm & 14mm? 13mm is 1/2 an inch an not used on any Japanese bolt I've seen yet...

Re: Changing fork Springs and Butter bolts
"General purpose" M8 fasteners are 13mm. A lot of automotive applications use 12mm since it's added lightness and costs less.
Similarly auto applications won't usually use the bog-standard 17mm on M10, they'll be 14mm. ....and use hex sockets (preferably face-drive types) wherever possible........ |
