SV650S Failing to Start
Having a headache with the SV (K3) at the moment. Last Friday morning I had planned to ride it to work but it conked out not far from the house.
It had started and run fine, no problem. The conking out wasn’t instant, it started missing and running on one, then back to two, then back to one and then nothing. Tried several times to start it, plenty of coughs and splutters but nowt else. Pushed it back and abandoned it. It hasn’t really been anywhere for about 4 months so the first suspect was duff fuel, as well as possibly some water getting in. Yesterday I had a bit of spare time to try and sort it, so tank off, drained and a gallon of VPower added. No start, so tank off again, a few squirts of brake cleaner down the throttle bodies and thumbed the starter - fired up no problem, briefly. Back on with the tank - cranks fine, no ignition. No FI codes on the dash, pump runs, tried with the stand up and down (bike on paddock stand), rattled the tip over sensor, nothing. Put the jump leads across from the car, still no ignition. Had to stop as I needed to cook the kids tea, anyone here know of anything I’ve missed? It’s like everything works except the injectors aren’t being told to open. Thanks |

Re: SV650S Failing to Start
I assume you're getting a spark on the plugs.

Re: SV650S Failing to Start
It runs on brake cleaner squirted down the throttle bodies, so that should prove the ignition system. I would have thought if it runs on brake cleaner then if fuel was making it into the combustion chambers it would at least try to fire, but its not doing anything - no smell of fuel or anything. It's like there is no signal to the injectors to open but I can't think what would cause that without throwing an FI code. Hopefully tomorrow I'll whip the plugs out just to be certain that they're not sopping wet.

Re: SV650S Failing to Start
Can you hear it priming when you turn the igniton on? I'd be tempted to start pulling electrical connections apart under the tank and inspecting them.

Re: SV650S Failing to Start
It would be odd of both injectors were faulty. Maybe something common to both such as wiring. If the pump is priming maybe not enough pressure? Blockage in the fuel line somewhere?

Re: SV650S Failing to Start
Water in fuel? Does it live outside in the rain and could water have got into the tank via the filler cap recess or the drain pipe that goes through the tank? If so you get water sitting under petrol in the tank and eventually just water goes through the fuel pipes.Common problem on old carb bikes, not sure if it affects the K3s

The tank was drained and a gallon of VPower added.

Re: SV650S Failing to Start
A couple of weeks on and still no further with this. Replaced the plugs as a just in case (old ones were manky but working), checked electrical connections, still nowt. Stripped the Tip Over Sensor, that’s all free and moves. Charged the battery to make sure enough voltage is there, still nothing. Just turns over and will only run on brake cleaner.
Anyone got any final suggestions before I farm it out to the specialist down the road? |

Re: SV650S Failing to Start
Have you checked the clutch, Neutral & side stand switches are fully working?
Might be worth bridging these circuiting them to take them out the equation, as they would prevent the engine starting. |
