Anyone, or knows anyone who, owned a Triumph GT6?
A work-mate's looking at maybe buying one and I wondered if anyone had any insight into owning\doing up one of these beasties?

i had a spitfire, which was the convertable smaller engined jobbie.
electrics and engines are pretty easy to work on there a trimph place for parts in telford thats pretty good. its the chassis youve got to be carful about, if its rotten, its a right mare to put right |

im not entireley sure why the two carbs are sticking out through the bonnet??
but id definatley advise going and having a look at it. i know theres a place around called the spitfire graveyard, and theres a forum about aswell, cant remeber the url to that one though http://www.spitfireg1.f9.co.uk/frame.htm http://www.triumphspitfire.nl/graveyard.html HTH Marshall |

i used to have a spitfire aswell.. had it for about 7 yrs, and probably replaced most bits at some point or another.
the strange growth on the yellow one, is because its got the 6 cyl engine out of a gt6 in it.. (or at least the bonnet off a gt6) a spitfire had 4 cyylinder, and the extra 2 clash with the bonnet.. hence the bulge. not sure why you would need to cut holes for the carbs.. either the engine has been mounted too high (or the carbs) are the wrong ones. theres a big hole in the bulkhead on the pic... which is an expensive area to fix. can you mate weld?? bonnets rot around the front, behind the headlight.. chassis rails at the front, behind the bumper.. (any pretty much everywhere). unless he's doing it as a hobby, its far cheaper buying one thats in good nick and just tinkering with it, rather than a basket case, that needs heaps of cash.... the yellow one would be a far better buy if he can raise the cash... and a bit nippy k (a bitter ex spitfire owner) |

The carbs are through the bonnet because the GT6 had a 2 litre engine not the 2.5 that is in that one. The 2.5 was in the TR6 but with Petrol injection not twin carbs.

My brother had a GT6 - or poor man's E-Type as they were known. Contrary to most classics where people believe original are best - the Mark I and II has really bad suspension and brakes. The suspension was better in the Mark III. If the rear lights are small roundish jobbies its probably a I or II, the III had wider cluster. Nice cars once sorted.

I had a MkIV 1300 Spitfire, with a Sebring fastback hard top... so looked like a GT6, but had the lower insurance of the 1300, and roof off bonus in the summer. Sounded good too with a Peco big bore straight thru exhaust, but performance was still feeble
I'd say it's an ideal project, but it's keeping the rot at bay that's the problem though all the mechanicals are straight forward, I'd guess some parts are getting scarce... but then there must be more specialists making parts than when I had mine. I've got a feeling that the GT6 gearbox and back the transmission's a bit fragile as I think it's all as per the lower spec/lower power Spitfire. RR |

I had a few Triumph cars and they make good pets, with parts readily available and reasonably priced.Like all old cars rust is the big enemy, but the GT6 is a seperate chassis design,so nothing is unsolvable. You will need a toolkit, and somewhere to keep the car and work on it.The street is a poor option.
