Default Front cylinder problem (again)...?

Riding home last night and after a measly 250m or so bike cut out when I pulled the clutch in (stupid and inexperienced me didnt notice and let it out again, bad idea! rear wheel locked and nearly highsided!!!) So I gather my thoughts again and carry on. Next few times I pull the clutch in bike cuts out (this time I fire up on the starter). Then I get to a straight give it some beans and the bike is really jerky (just like the one cylinder problem), however if I keep the throttle constant everything is fine. I get most of the way home and had to drop into a friends house, bike idles fine. Come out again after about 45mins, bike fires up (still pi**ing it down) idles fine and rides the rest of the way home.

Now I've had the front cylinder problem before, I took Northwinds advice and smeared grease around the HT lead area. Could what I experienced earlier be the same problem? If so will a fenda extender DEFINATELY cure the problem? (I probably didnt smear enough grease around the lead).

Sorry for the essay !

Hi Andy-I had the same problem last week-done what everybody recommended with the front plug and lead after making sure it was clean and dry-I left the heater on in the garage for a few days so any moisture could evaporate, covered the frontlead and the surrounding area in grease(but done it tidy so it looks ok)and fired the bike up-had a good run yesterday on it with no probs-fitted the fender extender also-so hopefully thats it-just make sure the leads are dry and use plenty of grease-the fender extenders ugly but if its gonna help stop the front cylinder cutting out I'm just gonna put up with it.
Keep the faith mate-you'll get it sorted

What I dont understand (and why I'm asking because I know its bee ncovered loads before) is that it was running OK until I pulled the clutch in (it didnt happen everytime I pulled the clutch in) or tried to accelerate hard. It even idle'd OK. What I had when it happened last time was a bike that wouldnt run at all with the clutch in and there wasnt a chance in hell it would idle. It just makes me think it COULD be something else?

Strange one that mate-hopefully someone with more experience will be able to point you in the right direction-with mine it was ok until I tried to go faster then it started to cut out!

Could there be something wrong with the clutch switch? A bit of muck in there perhaps. When I was having running problems with the raptor someone suggested it could be the clutch switch that was on its way out, and it can give symptoms like the front cylinder/rain problem. It could be worth disconnecting it a giving it a clean with WD40.

Thanks Amanda, will give it a go. Would that explain the lack of power and the very very lumpy engine when i tried to accelerate?

I'm not sure really, but I think the clutch switch does something in the ignition circuits and it could cause a misfire. The raptor had horrendous surging in the first couple of gears and was really violent every time I let the clutch out which is why someone suggested the clutch switch when it was clearly not the weather affecting it. I could be barking completely up the wrong tree because I'm not very mechanically minded, but it's a cheap fix if it is that. Good luck

I take you've been riding in the rain?

As with most things on the stick with the simple .

If the above(rain) is correct I stick with the front cyclinder. It can be for a while and when you stop or in your case pulled the clutch The moisture/water had a better chance to do a good job of cutting the spark- Trying to describe it but my brain ain't working properly.

Which grease did you use as if not rubber safe you may have made the boot swell up and so not doing it's job properly. Depends on how good a job you did as well. Plug hole covered.

Basically I'll put money on the spark plug. Make sure you clean the grease of around the spark plug lead are to prevent crap getting in betfore youattempt to remove and clean/replace the plug.Check the drain hole if clear.

Cheers Ben, I thought it was prob the spark plug problem but the fact that it idle'd fine when I got to my friends and then rode home fine 45mins later suggested that it may not be. I'm going to get a fender extender anyway and see what happens. I used the same grease as Northy and its fine for use on rubber. Like you said stick with the most simple and work from there
