New 2005 SV Owner - a few "sound" problems
Hi folks,
First of all, I am new to the Forum - am the proud new owner of a 2005 SV650 (naked) with 2500miles on it. I come from a land of straight 4 engines, so I have NO IDEA how a V-Twin should sound like, I just know it has tonnes of low end torque!. I have read a lot of posts, but wanted some fresh viewpoints on two sound issues I am having: 1. There is a ticking sound coming from the front end of the bike (front cylinder) - about 10 ticks a second. 2. There is a hissing sound when I give it ANY throttle. Both sounds occur at around 3000+ RPM and the bike needs to be hot. The bike has power to spare, and rides like a dream, very responsive - however both sounds increase in volume and speed (for the ticking) with the higher RPMs. I am told that V-Twins are just noiy machines, but thought I get some opinions before I spend $200 (L.100) and take it to the shop for a look. Thoughts? Bike details: 2005 SV650 No Modifications 91 Octane Fuel Stock everything. Cheers!! Richard Vancouver Canada. |

Re: New 2005 SV Owner - a few "sound" problems
Welcome to the mad house.
I'm the resident mechanical numpty, but are you sure BOTH these noises are assocated to revs & not road speed? The ticking (or could it be described as a tin rattle - faint at low revs but gets more noticable?) could be com chain tensioners? The hissing could be brakes binding (kind of a "swoooshing" noise)? Cam chains would be kind of odd on a K5, but still, you never know. Of course, I could be barking in an apartment block, nevermind the forest! |

Re: New 2005 SV Owner - a few "sound" problems
Thank-you for the welcome!
Good point, I am at around 25mph (40-50kph) when I notice them. The ticking is a type of rattle, muffled sound - but it doesn't do it when idle otherwise I could get a sound clip for you. Hissing: I thought it was the brakes as well - so I pulled them in (front) and it still did it (again while under very minimal acceleration), at around 3500rpm 30mph. For example while off the throttle down a hill, nothing, the instant I put ANY throttle on the bike, a hiss, akin to a leak (and yes, I did check for tyre leaks). The sound is more like air escaping, not a metal on metal sound. However it is hard to pinpoint while wearing a full face shield, but it is detectable. Any other info I can provide? Cheers R. Quote:

Re: New 2005 SV Owner - a few "sound" problems
I get a hissing sound on my ´02 curvy too. I just noticed it recently while riding without my earplugs - I usually wear them so I don't know whether the hissing has been there for a long time or not... but just makes me wonder what could cause it.
We've readjusted the chain recently (first put it too tight, then readjusted and now the chain slack looks OK). We did our best to check the alignments and all while adjusting the chain... And I think the hissing is pretty similar both before and after the chain adjustments. The hissing is not a metallic sound but seems to occur at all speeds, It's kind of repetitive sound and occurs faster when there are more revs at the bike. A bit hard to describe Any ideas anyone? |

hardly an expert here but could the hissing simply be induction noise?
open throttle = suck air in wider throttle opening = more air gets sucked in more revs = more air ? |

Re: New 2005 SV Owner - a few "sound" problems
the clicking came from my front pot or around that region, im sure it is the cam, but what im not sure of is wether its supposed to sound like that. i also get a little hiss from my breaks for example if im puting it away and wheeling it in to the garage thats when i hear that.
my issue is i cant remember if it sounded like that before my off? so thats why i get worried, BUT what i do know is my chain should not touch my swingarm. . . better sort that pretty sharpish.. Jon |

Also, sounds like your brakes are binding if you're pushing it along and can hear a light swooshing noise. Nothing to really worry about if this is the only sign, but binding all the same. |

Re: New 2005 SV Owner - a few "sound" problems
hardly, in a 02 model at least
Whether it could be induction noise, I really don't know. No idea how induction's supposed to sound like. (Sorry for stupidity ) It's also possible that the rear brake could make the noise but how can I check that? If it's the rear brakes, should I do something about it too? |
