Rear axle nuts
Hi guys
Unfortunately my socket set only goes up to 17mm and I need to tighten my chain this evening. What size are the rear axle nuts and are they both the same size? Also, do I loosen both left and right side? Thanks |

Re: Rear axle nuts
Good morning.
22mm on a Curvy, & 24mm on a Pointy methinks. You will need to hold the other end of the spindle with a suitable spanner or socket. If your bike is a Curvy model. You also need to loosen the brake torque arm bolt. Don't forget to tighten it up after adjusting the chain. Spindle torque setting is; 65nm on a Curvy, & 100nm on a Pointy. Cheers. |

I think you're getting confused between caliper types. Certain rear calipers, often found on Kawasaki's & Triumph's, have a bush inside the caliper lug. The fork on the torque arm clamps against the ends of the bush. Therefore when the wheel is moved rearwards when adjusting the chain, the bush theoretically rotates inside the caliper lug. However, It often doesn't, because the bush is seized in place. The Curvy rear caliper has no such bush. Therefore the fork on the torque arm clamps against the outsides of the caliper lug. When moving the wheel rearwards, the lug on the caliper would be under strain if the bolt wasn't loosened. Cheers. |

Re: Rear axle nuts
Bolt itself is bush, it is shouldered.
But you are right, only front one is shouldered and pivoting so you do need to loosen rear. All my do pivot because I don't over tighten rear bolt so I don't need to do that step. |

Re: Rear axle nuts
Thanks for the responses guys
I have a pointy - so I need a 24mm socket? (I have a torque wrench already) And both nuts are the same size? The right one looks smaller. |
