H'mm spark from the front plug is particularly weak, and disappeared after about 20 seconds when I ran the engine.

Drained the float bowls and checked the choke plungers too, but everything was fine.

So do I replace the coil, as well as the plug cap. Cap didn't seem particularly secure in the HT lead, so may try trimming the HT lead back by about 10mm.

Have you cleaned out the plug 'well' and its drainage hole.

Its been in my garage for nearly 3 years, so its drier than the Gobi desert in the front spark plug tunnel

R1ffR4ff will be along soon to tell you to check suppression resistor in plug cap,
should be 5000 ohms ( and as the man says anything north of 8000 ohms, bin it......).

You can always take plug cap off the lead and try the spark from end of lead ( tape lead to side of head and let spark jump from centre of lead across insulation to outside where it lies against head ).

Swapped the front & rear plug caps & coils, made no difference, still only firing on the rear pot.

Sprayed carb cleaner into the front carb, that also made no difference.

The only thing I haven't changed is the front HT lead

Nope, fresh fuel, new HT lead and plug cap. Coils have been swapped round to eliminate a duff coil. Choke plungers are fine.

I'm stumped at the moment. Can't see any chaffing on the loom, but I haven't got round to undoing the tape yet

So either electrical, blocked jet, or maybe carb diaphragm has perished and split?

Have you had another look at the spark on the front plug since swapping the coils to see if it is still poor?

Yep swapped them round too. It is firing, but opening the throttle it just doesn't pick up properly. Idle is rough and it's popping and banging on choke, and runs on the rear with the choke off, then it'll stall.
Front plug colour is normal and dry

Did you drain the tank before putting fresh fuel in?
