Default ? for camera gurus

thinking of a new compact point and shoot specifically the Canon IXUS 140 as i lost my last camera while on jollys. i dont do fancypantz cameras and just want a cheep point and shoot i can stick in my pocket and take snaps while out and about.

i fancy a camera that has GPS so will tag the pics of the location they were shot at.

now what's got me a little confused is ''What's more, you can use the camera to keep track of shooting locations through GPS. This excellent feature is made possible through your smartphone's GPS technology which syncs with your camera over WiFi''

does the above statement mean that i need a smartphone in order to use the GPS function?

I would not go with the Canon IXUS I've not had good photos from their compacts.. but that's just one mans opinion.

with the canan you are correct you need to connect to your mobile for the gps if you want to do gps geo tagging you need a smart phone which allows hotspot internet sharing for your camera to connect to via wifi.

alternatively you can get a camera with a built in wifi & gps - like this

cheers. looks like i'll have to do a little more googlefoo.

£300 is well out my price range (guaranteed i'll loose it or drop it). might push to £170 absolute max. i'm not to fussed about image quality as i'm not a photosnob.

just looking for a cheep point and shoot with gps tagging.

Why new? My last Canon IXUS camera was bought on ebay 6-7 years ago and is still going strong, the one I bought new (same model) before this lasted a year or so! Incidentally, pics are great though can suffer with a bit of blur if the flash isn't used though this is probably due to me not being steady enough when taking pictures!

i have a preference for Canon as they usually have good battery life with great pics but i don't really care what i use when out and about on the bike. the pics are only to jog my failing memory

i have a thing about second hand electrical items so buy everything new unless its some obscure hifi item that don't get made any more like my current turntable.
