Replacing the horn
My horn seems to be on it's way out so I've decided to replace it with something a bit louder.
Can I stick anything that's 12V on? I was thinking of going to a scrap yard for a car horn |

Re: Replacing the horn
I used a Stebel Nautilus, split the compressor from the horn and used the relay supplied with it, as above.
Compressor in the seat unit, horn in the fairing, connected by some plastic tubing. Much louder than stock

Re: Replacing the horn
As maviczap says.If you use a high powered one watch the current draw.
I have an older single Stebel on a CX500 which didn't need a relay as it came as a pair which would have needed a relay. I'd take a punt on one of these:Advertised @115 Db. £5.95 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12v-Replac...cAAOSwmLlX83AI HTH

Re: Replacing the horn
Are you sure it's on it's way out? The screw on the back of mine drifts undone sometimes and then then rise in temp from the radiator causes it to stop working mid rides. Took me a while to work out why it worked on startup all the time and stopped once warm. The heat was enough to make the misadjustment slightly worse to the point that it didn't function. Once I readjusted the screw it was all good again.

Re: Replacing the horn
I got this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221675979432 Like Maviczap's suggestion, but cheap and comes with the required relay. It can be mounted without splitting it but it's neater if it is. Mine isn't split, mounted on a custom bracket hanging off the side of the radiator near where the original was. The relay is mounted on the original horn bracket. They do wear out quite quickly though. I'm on my third in about 5 years. The first was a genuine Stebel. From what I can see there's barely any difference between these and the cheap copies.

Re: Replacing the horn
Yeah, twice I've pulled up alongside a car and tooted my standard horn and they haven't noticed at all. I want something very loud but very compact to replace it.

Re: Replacing the horn
I've moved my standard horn to in front of the radiator. I bent the thin OEM bracket into an L shape and bolted it to the rad cover screw.
It's stopped my horn being cooked by the front cyl and radiator and it now actually works while being ridden. |
