Default Best chain engine degreaser?

Car Plan Spray or Brush on
Gunk Brush on
Motul C1 Spray
Swarfega Jizer brush on

Or something else?

my chain has seen better days - very well lubed, but not been in use for a while and want to give it a good clean. got a bit of surface rust, no tight spots tho.

same for the engine, lots of dirt and grime i want to give her a full clean before she goes to bed for a few months.

I want to do this myself (you know, fairing off etc)

rather than splash out on a professional clean which will be circa £60

cleaning is soothing

Paraffin for the chain - works like a dream. Not tried it on engine though...

that's the purple stuff ... I think I have some of that kicking about... i would take the chain off if I had a link breaker and give it a proper soak

I might just go with Gunk, I've used that before and had good results. plus it's cheap as chips only £5 delivered

Don't think the stuff I've got is purple, just clear. Was about £6 for five litres from B&Q. They sell it mainly for patio heaters I think. I'd just put some in a spray bottle and use a toothbrush to get the worst of the crud off. Then wipe over with a paraffin soaked rag.

Just oil the chain. It will clean itself up as you ride.I always think putting solvents on will clear the lube out of the bearings. Not good.

it's lubed at the moment but the winter saw that the chain now has surface rust on the outside of the chain... and I won't be riding for a few months and just don't want it to sit there - getting worse?

Paraffin - very cheap, and at least as good as the commercially available cleaners.

Manufacturers say clenaing it is your choice, as said above, it's self-cleaning. Degreaser (don't do it!) or paraffin etc. won't remove rust.

I wouldn't say a chain was necessarily self cleaning. Sure, the friction when you ride will remove some grime, but if you let your chain get too dirty then you would effectively have a paste that would grind between the chain and sprockets causing them to wear quicker. Obviously over cleaning isn't good either, but I think a wipe over with paraffin every now and then certainly isn't a bad thing.

You squirt lube on, it flings off, and it's not on its own.
