I got to near Aberfoyle and turned back. The roads were a bit unpredictable. Some were ace, but then you'd hit a big wet dirty bit, right on the corner. When it started spitting I decided I'd had enough

Sending to my phone removes all the custom route points and only sends the start and finish points, picking the fastest route. And My Maps just looks like a big steaming pile of counter intuitive uselessness

Had the same problem. Map out on computer with adjustments and custom waypoints... send to phone and it's just all recalculated by Google however it wants and you have to add all your points in again.
I had some success with Rever for a bit when I had a free trial, but didn't carry on using it as I got a Garmin instead. Still learning how to use that too!

When you plotted the points on your phone were you able to save it somehow? I ended up just putting the screenshot on my phone

Download tyre and use that to create custom routes.

the Garmin adventure routes are ok, but can be a bit unpredictable sometimes. i often have to tweak my setting en route as it either starts taking too many smaller roads, or too many larger roads.

I'm not looking for sat nav style directions, just something to refer back to when I reach that 'oh crap where TF am I meant to be going' moment

I couldn't save anything on Google maps. Just the "send to phone" option and once the browser is closed it's gone. If you don't want turn by turn directions then the free version of Rever may work for you. You plan on computer when you're logged into your account. Then open the app when you're out and also log into your account and your pre prepared routes should be there for you to see.
If you want dictated directions it definitely costs after the free trial.
