A different engine upgrade?
I've been reading a lot about how its possible to upgrade the sv650 up to just under 100 bhp or so but after that, the crank loses its reliability.
Assuming it costs a fortune to get a crank that is strong enough, is there a different engine that fits in the SV650 frame that can get a good 100 bhp with reliability? I know the SV1000 does about 114 bhp, but don't want to lose the lightness of the 650. Is this a feasible idea or should I ignore the figures and just work on reducing my pie consumption to increase my power to weigh ratio? |

Re: A different engine upgrade?
A Street Triple weighs less than a (2016) SV as does an MT-09. If you want to keep the SV then follow Colin Chapman's advice: "Simplify, then add lightness". The current SV produces about 10 bhp more than the original.
These people offer big bore kits (no prices): http://www.jhsracing.co.uk/suzuki-sv650-specialists/ 677cc big bore kit (for current SV): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WISECO-CK...-/231616605402 |

Re: A different engine upgrade?
Those big bore kits will be a problem on AL7 and maybe Gladius as well because the cylinder bores are SCEM ( ceramic coated ) straight onto aluminium, with no steel liner. I don't know what adding 25cc would do to power anyway.... I wonder if you will need to upgrade clutch if you do get more power.
As Seeker rightly says if you want more power maybe you need to get a different bike, plenty of options around.

Re: A different engine upgrade?
You need more torque not HP so how about just changing sprockets to improve acceleration after all nobody goes above 70mph anyway

Re: A different engine upgrade?
A big bore kit will give you more torque but not a great deal of extra power without more work on valves, squish etc. You would have to work very hard indeed to get 100bhp, really much over 80 would be an achievement. By hard work I mean a lot of time but more to the point, thousands of pounds, which people seem to try to ignore these days. You need to think about what you want. If it's riding faster then there are a lot of non-engine upgrades that will get you that. If you want 100bhp you need a different bike.

Re: A different engine upgrade?
I think I was looking at 100 bhp as the sort of vfr power I'm used to.
It's nice to be able to twist the throttle and get to the right speed quickly. I didn't know about the big bore kits but I don't see it as being worth it for power alone, although as a way to fix a worn out engine, it could be useful. Think cutting down on the pies is the way forward. A hp is gained from every 7 lbs lost, so I understand. Thanks for your advice Sent from my Nokia 6.1 using Tapatalk |

Re: A different engine upgrade?
It's a bit of a conundrum really. The most exciting bike I've ridden, I think, is a KX125. When you crank it on and it hits the powerband, it's like a firework going off in your trousers. The SV on the other hand is more powerful and faster, but ridden on its own it can feel a bit flat. Put it back to back with another bike and you're keeping up with them, almost wondering why because there isn't really that screaming power hurtling you along.
In terms of power there are some quick wins, plenty of threads on here discussing things like the cam swap, but after that it's serious money. Mate of mine has a big bore kit and it does feel fast. If you want to ride fast on the road, or on the track, you need training in how (and they're quite different skill sets). And yep, being in good shape is good for everything! |
