Default sticky tyres.

WOW!! i work for the RM as ive said in the past and today we had some used tyres come through and i noticed that the rubber could actually be moved just by rubbing your thumb on them. now this maybe old news to you guys but in all my years of bike riding i never knew they made the rubber on tyres that soft and sticky
it makes my stock sv tyres seem well abit hard
time for some more i think.

whats the RM?

And yes they are extrememly sticky. from having D220's on the road bike and supercorsa's on the race Sv it is quite amazing how bad i find the roa dtyres. And yes i know the 220's are ****e but even with decent road tyres the difference is amazing

My current favourite tyre choice is a race scrub front (supercorsa) along with an 010 rear. This gives decent life on the rear (until I did a load of donuts, anyway ) and a front that lasts pretty well along with really good grip.

Should be able to get a used front for around £25 (I may even have some for sale after next weekend, though I would have said the above regardless ).

I dunno what the tyres were you were pervertedly feeling as they went past you, but I presume they were a soft compound track tyre?!? Which will be pretty useless to you on the road.

Why? Coz they only really work when HOT, it will be hard to get them up to full temperature on the road, therefore more grip will probably be attainable from a road compound tyre that is designed to offer its max grip at lower temperatures. The track tyre will have more ultimate grip, but its working temperature range is much smaller and higher up.

Also they will wear out much quicker than a true road tyre.

All that said I have x-race tyres on my road bike at the moment!!! But only coz they are a cheap source of rubber

Riding with a supercorsa front in winter vs a macadam and some other touring tyre, I'd take the supercorsa anyday. May need to be warmed to give ultimate grip, but still got enough to stoppy from cold pretty much, which the touring tyres wouldn't at all.

Seem to get pretty decent life out of scrub fronts, but the rears tend to get eaten up pretty quickly - though I've known people who have a little less harsh right hands to get 1500 miles out of one on a sports 600!

my neighbour rides the TT and NW 200.. - Joe Wood- see pics Courdelion posted after the NW200..

well- he has his bike in the back of his van and yea-- his slicks are like that-- they are like soft licquorice... (sp).. wierd.. really really tacky...

Have to admit even the track compound supercorsa’s (and rennsports) do have a fairly good usable heat range, Not sure I’d try a stoppie on a winters morn from cold like you mind . At the other end of the scale - Michelin Pilot Race 2s – massive grip when up to temp, but they would have you on your ars3 at a moments notice when anything other than roasting!!! They were prety nasty for this reason on the track, they would be lethal on the road!! As would a set of slicks!

At the end of the day I’d rather not ride on a set of track supercorsas in the winter personally.

I tried stoppies on the supercorsas and touring tyres quite a few times as well as general taking the ****.

Admittadely the Supercorsas wouldn't always stoppy, but the touring tyres never would - a mid tyre like an 010 may be better.
Also with the rear, the supercorsa would wheelie in the damp when the touring tyres would just wheelspin.

A few years ago had some pilot races on an ex-race zx9 which was tuned and geared for about 140mph - in pretty much anywhether it would light the rear up /very/ easily. I ended up just opening the throttle up down my cul-de-sac and letting it do a burnout to get some heat in it everytime I went out - before that had some slightly scary powersliding moments coming off the first roundabout with a very light throttle movement.

TBH though, Macadams are really, truly rubbish by modern standards. I did a few days winter commuting on a borrowed Bandit 6 with Rennsports on, while I was sorting it out for a mate, and they were rarely much better than a liability IMO, compared to the Roadtecs I usually use. On a wet, cold day... Nah. Slid over every white line or spot of tar banding. They were fine on the cold dry days, but not so much better than the Roadtecs to justify the downsides for me- but for summer? I'm sure they'd be dynamite.
