Default Starter Relay (99 Curvy)

Morning!

I seem to be having problems with my starter relay which is making my bike cut out.
Yesterday my bike would not start and after pulling wires etc, etc I gave my starter relay (the green box) a tap and everything fired up. It looks like I have a loose connection either into or from the relay and when it is tapped it switches everything on.

The only thing is on the way to work today when I turned on my headlights it cut everything out again and after tapping the relay everything can back on.

I was wondering if the loose connection could be whats making it cut out when I turn on the headlights and when I'm just riding along as witnessed by Dizzy & Interceptor or if it might be something to do with my battery & charging system also??

Thanks people.

Sounds like it could be corrosion on the starter relay. If you look at the relay behind the black saddle shutter on the right side you see the live connection going into the relay. On this connection is a thin slip of metal which supplies the the live feed for the main 30 amp fuse. It corrodes, as you load it, it gives up and you loose power. You could bridge it with a bit of wire or something till you get home, but it will need to be replaced.

I had the same problem you see... HERE

That sounds like the problem.

How much of it will I need to replace? It might just be a loose fuse but what you explained in that thread is the very same problem that I have. Looks like when it gets loaded up with my head lights turning on is making it throw a hissy fit.

So can I just replace the metal plate/wire thing or will I need a whole relay. I need to get it sorted as the clocks go back on the weekend and I will need my headlights.

Well the way the relay is made its possible you could add something to it, but will require some soldering, cutting and such. But I'd be worried it was rotted else where. Just replace the relay its self -
Linky - you need number 1 - part no - 31800-21E20

Get them for about 5-15 quid second hand I think.

Right guy's

I'm back but I do not have a picture so sorry about that.
Turns out that the connection onto the Starter Relay has a loose wire in it. I have cleaned all of the connector block up and added a little WD40. After putting it back together I have taped the wire attached to the connector block to some wires next to it to hold it where it will not disconnect. Jobs sorted for now but looks like I could do with re wiring that block it its possible.

The wiring in the block is quite weak... The relay itself's reliable but we've had a few of them go, mine among 'em, it's a real pain when it does but easy to replace. I think we'll probably see more as the old SVs get older.
