Exhaust pipe cleaning
Hey guys, my exhaust is the usual matt dirty yellow from the front wheel spray and I would like to clean it back to nice'n'shiny. Are there any magic potions or methods to achieve a nice shiny stainless pipe or it is down to Autosol and sore fingers?

Re: Exhaust pipe cleaning
There are lots of how too's on YouTube involving cooking foil, coke and other things. This stuff caught my attention though and you can buy it on Amazon, not cheap mind at around £21.

Re: Exhaust pipe cleaning
Harpic toilet cleaner. Not used it myself but it seems to be all the rage on the biker groups on FB and the before and after pics are rather impressive.

Re: Exhaust pipe cleaning
Any acidic cleaner like Harpic will help (even coke or tomato paste LOL), you can get something really strong called 'pickling paste' (based on nitric acid I think) which welders use to clean off discolouration caused by welding SS, The rust resistance of stainless steel depends on a 'passivation layer of chrome oxide' that forms on the surface, which is often a dull grey colour. The pipe will stay shiny for a while and then discolour again, especially where it gets proper hot.
You could try green scouring pads (mildly abrasive nylon, as opposed to brown abrasive nylon which can be very abrasive) with Harpic or Jif

Other than that a wire brush on a drill and Autosol, its stainless steel, not chrome, so wire brush brings it up quick

Re: Exhaust pipe cleaning
Opposite of bleach, Harpic removes limescale so it is acid (hydrochloric acid) based, bleach is a strong alkaline.
If you mix Harpic and bleach (domestos), watch out it makes a poisonous gas ( like the Chlorine gas Germans used in WW1).

Re: Exhaust pipe cleaning
Fun fact, my mum gassed herself when cleaning the bathroom when I was little due to mixing cleaners.
She was ok apart from nearly coughing up a lung or two. Sent from my XT1580 using Tapatalk |

Re: Exhaust pipe cleaning
LOL! OK, thanks Guys, some good suggestions there along with a laugh. As it seems acid is called for I think I will try carefully brushing limescale remover on first and work my way along the suggestions from there. I already gave it a go with ultrafine steel wool and autosol, but it is still stained in patches. I don't mind a strawed pipe, it's the patchiness I don't like.
Any more suggestions gratefully received. |

I think it was on here I seen Wonder Wheels recommended for the downpipe, I have used it several times, works well.
