I was just going to tell them at renewal but then if the worst happens and I have to make a claim, when they look at all my documents and see points which have appeared since the start of the policy in january this year, they might try and wriggle out of it?

Both my insurance companies were realy good about it, they both said that if they didn't insure people who had been done for speeding then they would have no customers.
I think the powers that be have become a victim of their own success on this front - if everyone's been done nobody thinks anything of it, it just becomes normal to have a speeding conviction.
When I had my misshap I thought I'd be in for losing my job and insurance would price me off the road. As it turned out my insurance (car and bike) went up by a combined cost of 50p a week, and my boss just laughed and said "I've been banned twice don't worry about it -your jobs safe"
