Broken collar bones
Not mine thank God but my son has snapped his playing rugby at school today.
It's a clean through break and miss aligned and as I'm sure a few of you fellow bikers have suffered the same fate I was looking for some advice. He's got to go to the fracture clinic tomorrow to see if they will do anything or not but I seem to remember someone on here saying get it plated or they can cause problems. Re: Broken collar bones
Only fractured mine, so it was only in a sling.
Most of the ones I've seen of Pro Cyclists like your son's break have been plated. Once healed at lot have the plates removed. Having had my jaws moved, they were held in place by plates after the op. Helps keep the bones in place whilst they heal. Also stops the ends of the bones moving against each other, which would be very painful! Hope he gets better soon.

But he's young, it'll heal quickly and be stronger than it was. Common injury for cyclists.

Re: Broken collar bones
Looks a bit like mine after a spill at Mallory Park a few years ago.
Had a plate in it for a year then had it taken out. Had constant pain and limited mobility in it since, hopefully your son will recover fully though.

Re: Broken collar bones
One of my friends broke his collar bone but also dislocated the shoulder. They didn't spot the dislocation on the initial x-rays. As a result it turned into quite a serious problem getting it back into place and he had that arm in a sling for months.
Yes, it was a cycling accident. |

Re: Broken collar bones
According to the good doctor wife that looks borderline if it will need plating or not,(unlike L3nny's which is a much clearer case!). Best to follow the advice of the Orthopaedic surgeon who will undoubtably have a look at it. Collar bones are usually quick to heal and one of the "little bones" we all take breaking lightly, but there are some pretty vital structures all around them so they do need treating with a certain amount of respect.
I chipped the end off one of mine taking a tumble in a beach race a few years ago. I held out for a couple more races but was barely in control of the bike by the end of the day so reluctantly took myself off to hospital. I didn't half cop it when the other half saw the X-rays.....
