Directions - Craflwyn/Beddlegert?
Coming up tomorrow from 'Nam (cheltenham rather than vietnam, and by audi rather than by Wagner-blaring helicopter gunship) for a FOUR DAY wedding (aka, 1/2 day wedding, 3 1/2 day **** up). So, up to Oswestry, then where - either the A55 or the A5?
I'm told the A5 is a nice bike road (which'll make me pine for the SV) but a bit of a bugger for caravans if you're stuck with four wheels. And the A55 is four wheel friendly and dull, but apparently has a contraflow at the moment? Oh, and if anyone drinks in Beddlegert, please don't lamp the lanky english bloke doing dodgy welsh accent impressions, wittering on about welsh nationalists, and making bad sheep related "jokes". That'll be my step-dad - he kind of gets like that after a few Stellas. Last family gathering saw us practically deported at the border of Cornwall... |

Dude you never been on the interesting bits of the A5, we take on the lesser known roads where plod lurks less. After Llangollen it gets better.
Matt, you want a direct route or one to give the Audi a workout? |

Re: Directions - Craflwyn/Beddlegert?
"give the audi a workout"? Nah, it's a car, it gets me from A to B, in the dry, in comfy seats, whilst playing my fave tunes, and can carry a suit and enough alcohol to run a student union bar in Newcastle for about an hour. If I want a workout, I take the SV, or watch the Lara Croft DVD again...
Having said that, I drive anywhere between 30 and 50K a year, most of which is spent at or near three figure speeds (my job involves testing private runways you understand) so a route that avoids speed cameras would be good, although I'm pretty good at spotting them. EDIT: Sorry, just noticed, it's Beddgelert, not Beddlegert - interesting story about some guy with a dog... Last edited by MiniMatt; 02-11-07 at 12:46 AM. |

A5 to B-Y-C and then on to Capel Curig. A4086 / A498 down toward Beddgelert. Craflwyn is about a mile before Beddgelert.
No fixed speed cameras on the route IIRC, but the Tallivan will be out until darkness falls. There might be one pretty much anywhere. Look out for parked white transit types. Not marked. Caravans will be sparse this time of year and plenty of opportunity to overtake. |

Nice one, thanks Lucky - BWC = Betsy-Coed? (spelling, I know)
Thanks for the heads up on the vans, unmarked white transits is definitely not something I'm normally attuned to spotting, we rarely seem to get them here, and when we do they're marked up like Blackpool illuminations. |

Ohhh a thought if travelling in daylight, the 40 mph limit in Pentrefoelas often has a cop with a radar gun on Friday evening. Easy to just 'coast' and not scrub off the speed as it is downhill.....
There is also often a van at the end of the long straight after Pentrefoelas to, just before the river Conwy. They can get you from a mile away on there. |
