Default Audi A3, who's had one?

Considering an A3 for our next car, anyone had one? What opinion do you have of them?

Considering one of the earlier (2000) 1.8 T Quattro sport ones to be specific

BIL has had a couple, good cars and he's clocked up high mileages in his.

Had a cam belt go on one, but this was down to a dodgy batch of bad cambelts. Went not long after it had been done by his regular garage.

Don't know if he got his money back

Middle sons got a 2008 2.0l tdi at the moment, very economical, very quick. Had a few niggly problems that only Audi could sort, error codes, software updates etc but on the whole quite a nice car.

I inherited a W reg 1.8 auto. I thought the auto box was awful and it was noisier then my mk3 golf diesel (m reg) on a run. I sold the A3 rather then the golf. I think the main problem was the auto box though.

I didn't even look at a3 when I bought my last car as a result, just bought a golf, but again this is probably prejudice from the awful auto box. My dads a4 is excellent however, which in manual.

Worst car I've ever owned (even the Ford Ka was better).

Had a pre facelift '99 tdi for 10 years, apart from the accelerator pedal sensor, no major problems. The tdi can suffer from the variable vain turbo sticking if you have a lot of town driving. Needs a long run to burn the carbon deposits off.
