I have a Win7 laptop for which I've bought an SSD drive. I thought I'd make a system image on my network drive (on Win10 desktop) but it seems that Microsoft don't allow creating system image to a network drive on Win7 Home Premium, you need the "better" version. Now that is annoying. You need an external drive or a DVD burner.
It would need 20 dvd to back it up to that format, I've found an old IDE drive so I've ordered an adaptor (to USB) and I'll create an image to that.
Anyone know if it's possible to just back up the Win7 OS instead of the whole drive?

I have an OEM copy (Toshiba) of Win7, Tosh have helpfully put the Windows key on the base of the laptop but after 8 years I cannot read the whole key. I used a key decoder and it has given me the key but it's totally different from underneath the laptop. I used the decoded key to download a win7 iso but Microsoft rejects the key (maybe because its OEM).
I do have (home created) Toshiba back up DVDs so, if all else fails, I can use them, but this inability to use the network drive is frustrating. (I deliberately didn't update my laptop to win10 because people were having driver issues with my model).

You could try Acronis true image - I have used it many times to take an image of my computer hard drive onto a USB hard drive, take out the old drive, pop in a new larger drive ( including a SSD on my desktop) and write the image back to the new unformatted drive - works perfectly every time - it even has settings to write image back to different systems. If you download Acronis you will need to first make a bootable CD or USB stick of the acronis to enable you to boot up you computer with its blank hard drive. I take an image of my computers every couple of weeks, makes me pretty immune to ransom software etc. I am still using acronis true image 2015, I did pay for 2017 and download it but did not like the interface as much so i reverted back to 2015.

Thanks for the info. I have also just found Macrium Reflect which will allow a system image to be created on a network drive

I learned the hard way that anything to do with backups using Windows utility is useless, I begged our head office to let me use acronis ( their IT policies were very strict but misguided), we had a ransomware attack on one of our laptops and tried to restore a backup made using Windows, not successful so took laptop and backup to a computer professionals, he could not restore backup either and his advice was not to use Windows utility, he did manage to track down and delete ransomware though. Just after I left the company I heard head office had rolled out acronis to all branches......WTF.
