Default Chain

What sort of quality is the original Suzuki chain fitted to the SV650A? I can't seem to stop the chain on my 2020 SV650 from rusting even though I have a Scottoiler fitted and clean the chain periodically with paraffin and rub oil on it with a sponge or soft brush .

I had the chain replaced on mine at 30k miles but only because I wasn't sure how long they're supposed to last. It didn't appear worn by the pull-it-off-the-rear-sprocket test. I only adjusted it 5 times in 5 years so I'd say it was a pretty good chain.
I've noticed that modern chains seems susceptible to surface rust on the side plates so I wipe mine down with an oily rag soaked in 30W gear oil over the winter. Not had any problems since.

I'd not worry about the rust, per se as it's probably just a surface rust rather than a structural kind.

Think I will brush the side plates with a brass wire brush and then coat with gear oil as suggested above.
I had a couple of bikes in the past with gold chains and they seemed better to keep clean.

if the chain has started rusting on the plates then nothing will stop it as the "skin" has been broken. you could try applying a rust cure like rust eater to each individual plate. or an even better idea and its what i do cover the plates in a good quality grease based no fling chain spray and dont clean it.

if you have ocd then get a gold chain.

What skin , do the side plates have some sort of factory applied coating ?

Still on the original chain on my Gen 3 at 33,000 miles - it's still within the wear limit. Mine also shows rust on the side plates if left unattended during winter. I brush a little ACF-50 on every month which really helps keep it at bay.

I cheat and use a Chain Oiler. No rust, occasional maintenance and the chain is always good to go. I use Tutoro, but other brands are available.

I have a Scottoiler V System fitted but it doesn't oil the outside of the chain plates.

Same here and I use GT85 PTFE chain lube ( Usually cheap at Wilko supermarkets or ASDA) to keep the chain lubed and all my lever/brake joints etc.
