Shock knuckle assembly

Hi guys put my mind to rest please regarding assembly of the front of the knuckle (cushion lever). Part 7 in the diagram. Does the washer/shim go between the frame and the bearing spacer (making it a shim) or between bolt head (part 5) and frame(making it a washer)?

The part goes between the linkage and the dog bones. It's a washer that protects the bearings

There's nowt on the dog bones mate. Do you mean the frame? The front mount fixes to the frame. Dog bones fix to the swinging arm.

Part 6, the collar, must be a tight fit in the frame so it cannot float sideways (much, say 1mm)

I think part 7's are washers, and should be used under the bolt head, and the nut, to protect the aluminium bracket on the frame. They probably wouldn't both fit between the collar and the frame anyway?

They don't use them on the dog bones, because they are steel (I think??)

Thing is they do fit between the collar and frame leaving about 1mm of float. Without them in there there's way to much float. Anyone with a curvy care to have a look at their front bolt mount. If it isn't under the bold head and nut then it sits inside the frame mounts. Should paid more attention when I stripped it.

They are going to be inside the frame then, you dont want much float.

Give me a few mins and I will look at mine......

It is dark, and under there is very dirty, but I think they are on the inside.

You definitely don't want much float (because when you do the bolt up, it will flex the frame inwards until it hits the collar, like a back wheel does)

they rest on the ends of the bush to take up slack between the bush and the frame lug

bolt - frame lug - washer - bush - knuckle bearing - bush - washer - frame lug - nut.

if these are worn then it can cause the bush to move on the bolt shoulder giving play. when you tighten the bolt/nut it slightly compresses the frame lug, without the washers the frame lug would not compress enough to take up the play allowing the bush to rattle on the bolt shoulder.

They (the washers) are there to protect the frame lugs. Even if the spacer was the correct length without them, the bearing spacer would create a depression in the relatively soft aluminium frame lugs when the bolt was fully tightened and the lever/knuckle would be able to rub against the frame lugs - worn frame lugs can't easily be replaced but the washers can. I seem to remember someone on this forum accidentally leaving them out and cracking a frame lug when they tightened the bolt!

Just the info I needed. I had it reassembled correctly then as that seemed the logical way, but sometimes ya just get a niggle in the mind that needs reassurance. Many thanks all.
