oil filter tightness
Am I a bad person: I have never torqued an oil filter.
Moisten the seal with oil, screw on the filter till it's tight and then one quarter turn more (by hand) - never had a problem. The Suzuki dealer said my filter was "loose" and I've just ruptured the Yamaha oil filter as the chain wrench ripped through it because it was on so tight. Never had that happen on filters I've fitted.

Re: oil filter tightness
you do it correctly. mechanics are apes and apply the "tight up till almost stripped thread" principle just in case it comes loose and they get sued.
there should never be a need to use a torque wrench on anything but critical components like engine parts. never trust a torque wrench. especially with old or "wet" threads. i always do another tighten after a few miles. |

Re: oil filter tightness
The stock Suzuki filter says to tighten 2 full turns from lightly seated. The owners manual says the same.
This is pretty tight and makes the filter a tad difficult to remove. I believe I tightened the last filter 1.5 turns and decided that was tight enough.

I do the filter up 'til it touches then an extra half-turn by hand. Never had a leak. The day before a filter change I spray the gap where the filter body is close to the crankcase with a little WD-40, and the filter unscrews easily with just light pressure on the chain wrench. |

Re: oil filter tightness
As I'm from Yorkshire, I am obliged to not spend money on new tools, I have to carry on using my dad's old chain wrench or renounce my identity

Re: oil filter tightness
I hand tighten then a bit more. Removing I use a band wrench which I source from the kitchen drawer where ot resides to be used to remove the wife's homemade pickle/jam jar tops

Re: oil filter tightness
I tried using one of those once on a tight oil filter ... ended up shredding it. Which reminds me, I still need to replace it.
