Default How many miles from a rear tyre?

Hi

I bought my SV 2 years ago and have managed to do just over 4000 miles since then. However, whilst chatting to my local garage yesterday he mentioned that the rear tyre will need replacing soon. It is a Dunlop Sportmax and to be honest it looks OK to me with loads of tread on the outside and it still appears to have a good amount around the centre, although they are starting to 'square off' a little bit. Am I being sold a kipper here or is 4000 miles about right?

I am not a speed freak, and certainly do not get anywhere close to getting my knee down, but I am a reasonably comfortable NSL rider, and although I use the bike mostly for commuting, I do give it the occasional social blast.

I am happy that the fronts last about twice as long as the rears but I was hoping to get more than 4000 miles from it.

I was wondering what sort of mileage people are getting from their tyres. Any info gratefully received. Thanks.

I used to get around 4000 to 5000 out my rear tyres when I had the SV, it sounds about right to me. If you're consistantly easy on the throttle you should be able to squeeze a few more milles out a rear.

Not sure what sort of tyre the Sportmax is supposed to be, but for commuting, the odd blast, and tyre longevity you should avoid soft sports tyres and look at a sports/touring tyre.

Loads of threads already on the forum about tyre choices, do a search and you'll find loads of info and opinions.

My sportmax d208r tyres did about 4000 miles, it's quite a sporty tyre so I was pretty pleased with the mileage ...less pleased that it was only a couple/few months though Also found they wore at around the same rate which was annoying.

Replaced with the avon storm much better tyre and the rear is just starting to go now at 5.5k

aye I found the avon storm much stickier than the sportsmax (sport tyre)
However I'm now considering the vp2 slightly sportier avon as I'm less of an all year ridernow

Depends on what most of your ridiing is too. Mostly motorway type riding will wear the tyre out or square it off quicker. Also dependant on riding style. One guy on here got over 10k to rear, IIRC. We got 1600 miles to a rear once. Damn 014s!
