Default Fork Oil Question

Hagon progressive springs and oil.

Old fashioned I know, but it does work.

get the correct linier springs for your weight
silkolene 7.5 rsf oil (+bottle of 20wt)

once you have done that then its trial and error with the oil. to set the correct oil viscosity you do the 'bounce test' and see how far or not the rebound overshoot is. if it still overshoots a fair amount then remove 40ml from each fork and replace with the 20wt. reducing the air gap will also help bottoming but at the risk of blowing seals if you go too far.

BTW you cant measure the oil amount in forks you have to measure the oil hight by using a special tool.

Cheers guys. A last quick question: What actually is the correct (standard) amount of oil in each leg (or air gap if that is the criteria)? Haynes manual seems crappy on the subject of front forks.

I think it's either 102mm or 120 in the Suzuki manual. I'll check when I get home

Blapper you know what mine was like! 9.0 linear springs and 15w fixed it! Just a tad of preload just so it grips the spring as well, i just done the 15w oil at first and noticed nothing! 9.0 springs are fine for me at 13stone, i think maybe 8.0 or 8.5 and 15w oil will suit you perfectly!

IMHO Suzuki (and any other manufacturer) put a lot of time into getting the best 'all-round' handling they can from stock suspension by careful selection of springs, pre-load and damping, but it will chosen to cover a reasonably wide range of rider weights, ambient temperatures, road conditions etc. and will be a compromise. Heavier oil may stop the diving a bit, but as Bibio says it will also slow down the rebound, and if your tyre ain't touching the road it can't grip, no matter how good the tyre is. I don't find the dive on my AL7 too bad, but then I rode a supermoto before and that dived like Tom Daley because of the long fork travel.

There is a good reason people fit Gixer forks rather than trying to reverse engineer sows ears into silk purses - and I wonder if messing with the forks internals can affect insurance because the handling can be affected in a bad way.

OK guys, thanks. All views will be considered and a decision will be made in due course. For now I'll just change the oil and consider my next action at my leisure rather than jump in and regret it later.

@sl0th86: I do indeed remember it well Joe. Maybe I can take her round the block sometime?

Thanks again to all who have helped with ideas, experience or advice.
