Default Cleaning of the chain?

Is it so bad to get the pressure washer out and blast the hell out of it, let it dry and then re-grease it?

A pressure washer risks blasting water into the seals, at least that is my understanding.

I just use a big paintbrush and old towel with a chain cleaning substance, take 5 minutes.

If you've no toothbrushes going spare or parrafin, WD40 a rag and elbow grease does just as well.

Any light oil you may have about, diesel, lamp oil paraffin, just as long as it is an oil. This keeps the seals lubricated and allows better penetration of whichever chain lub you use.My preference is to re-lub a second time after a short ride while the chain is hot.
I would only pressure wash a chain if it was off the bike and could be soaked in an oil bath before refitting

Paraffin is way cheaper than any chain cleaner but just as good and re-useable. Fill a large coffee jar with the stuff, clean your chain with a large denture type toothbrush and put the lid on the jar when your finished. All the gunk will settle at the bottom so you can use again on the next clean. Dispose (safely and sensibly of course) every X amount of cleans and refill. Lasts for donkeys.

Re-lube heavily after cleaning as it really gets rid of all the old gunky lube leaving a clean but dry chain.

I find chain cleaning almost therapeutic (sp?) but then im kinda sad like that.

Or just put some newspaper down under the chain?

The Muc-Off dry chain cleaner is really good.

we power wash the work bikes mate and to be honest the chains look worse than any i've seen-they get covered in wd40 afterwards then re lubed but still look like crap, if they don't get relubed everyday they start to squeek like hell and before you know it they end up with seized links and the chain banging off the sprocket cover on the downshift( but our bikes do get hammered rotten)-better to brush it with paraffin and lube it.

Cleaning chain = waste of time
