Fair dues if you only going to do it once.
In which case I'd take the train.

Train would definitely be the logical choice. But I've already paid for everything to do with my bike from summer jobs and the train would end up costing more than enough extra to cover food and beer.. Plus it's fun.
I don't really get the chance to ride it unless it's summer anyway - I'm a student and don't have the time (which I know a lot of people might think is a load of rubbish!).

I'm going to invest in some overgloves, useful for summer anyway. I will eventually get goretex winter gloves when I can regularly ride in the winter.

So, what are peoples' experiences with things like spada overmitts:

or even better still, army surplus overmitts:

Particularly, what's it like to operate the controls. I use 3 fingers for braking and clutch (I know, I'm a weirdo) and I think I might have to get used to using 4 if I use these kind of mits.
If you want to go down that route, bar muffs are your friend, you won't get warmer, more waterproof or dexterous gloves. Horrifically ugly, but highly functional, can be installed or removed in five minutes if you don't want them on all the time. If you put a small hole in the side you can run a bar end through so they don't press back on your levers at speed.

Hadn't thought of this.. I've ordered those army surplus ones though. Reviews are really good.My mum told me it'll still be mild at the end of the month and to man up. So that's settled.

For a one off trip your mum is right, just man up. You can always tell your grand children in 50 years time how the Police pulled over a snowman going to a party on a motorbike.

But for regular trips a heated jacket is the dogs danglies. Did Stranraer to Portsmoouth on a cold February day. About 5 tank fulls of fuel for the Firestorm. However, the heated jacket was the life saver keeping core body temperature warm. Only needed half heat as full heat was too much after half an hour of riding.

Only problem is it doesn't fit any more due to gaining a few kgs
