Default Charging Issues

Hello all,

I have been having a few issues with starting the bike. Ive got a K1 SV650 and for a few weeks when starting its sounds like the battery is low but ive just managed to get it going before it dies. On tue I went to start it and the battery completely died and this was after a 70+ mile rides on sat and mon.

I have charged the battery up put it back in and hooked the multimeter up to it.

At idle the voltage is 12.45V
at 5000 rpm the voltage is 12.60V
and at 5500 rpm the voltage is 12.66V

Ive used the manual and had a search on here and done all the checks that I have found and I dont think anything is standing out as the obvious problem. Hopefully someone whos is a little better with electrics can help me out. My test results are:

Current drain: 0A

Stator Resistance:

Red wire to yellow wires: 0 ohms for all 3
Black wire to yellow wires: 0 ohms on all 3

Earth to yellow wires: 0 on all 3

yellow wire to yellow wire: 1.5 ohms between all 3
probe to probe: 0.9 ohms
so yellow to yellow: 0.6 ohms between all 3

When looking at the reg/rec the voltages were intially high and jumping around and then after a few minutes I tried again and they had settled down. Im not sure if this is normal

Battery +ve to red reg/rec wire: initially 0.22-0.27V Then 0.08/0.09
Battery -ve to black reg/rec wire: initially 0.17-0.28V Then 0.06/0.07

When doing the diode check on the reg/rec it was initially lower then I repeated and it had got slightly higher.
The results for each yellow wire with second results in brackets

Black multi - Black reg: 0 0 0

Black multi - red rec: 577 581 576
(601) (605) (600)

Red multi - Black reg 591 590 592
(605) (600) (602)

Red multi - red reg: 0 0 0

AC voltage at idle between stator yellow wires: 26V accross all 3
AC voltage at 5000rpm between stator yellow wires 82/85/83V

Voltage accross red and black wires on stator side:
Ignition off: 12.5V
Ignition on: 11.7V

Once the voltages on the reg/rec had settled down I checked the voltage to the battery and it was still low.

I hope this all make sense. Any help would be appreciated!

This has all the symptoms of a dead battery, one or two cells can affect how the SV turns over.

Failing to start even after a long run or charging it are another sign

The battery is only about a year old and because there had been a few times where I have managed to just get the bike started before it died completely but next time round it hasn't been as bad so its obviously charged up a bit, I had ruled that out. and after taking it off and fully charging it, it seems to be holding its charge.

Can the battery test you get done at the garage find a fault if its only 1 or 2 cells?

I had the same thing happen to my curvy after about a year, poor battery care was the cause of my batteries demise, so don't rule it out.

Yes, a garage should be able to check the battery

Cant say I take good care of the battery without having a garage. I will get it out and get it tested.

Thanks for your help!

Yes, mines hooked up to the optimate all the time now, tricky if you haven't got a garage.

I will do in a few months time so I will definitely be plugging it in all the time after this.

Is it normal for the reg/rec to initially give dodgy readings before settling down after a few minutes? Does it need to warm up before it starts to work properly?
