Just in case you didn't see it in IB, a couple of us are heading in your direction in September so some local info would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking the best place to stop for a brew, or a pub that does a decent lunch that might require a slight detour. And if there are any really good cheese shops let me know please!

We'll be heading up on 8th so will be riding the area on 9/10/11 September. Planning on looking for a cottage now as that may work better than a B&B for 4 nights giving us a base to dump our stuff. Just got to find a place with twin beds or a sofa bed. I want to stay near Wensleydale for a Wallace & Grommit style cheese holiday, and bimble about from there do not sure how far north yet.

The next dale up - Swaledale or Arkengarthdale is more scenic and there should be plenty of accommodation around Reeth. There are a couple of decent pubs there too
Yoredale is just a short hop from there either via Leyburn or the long way round over Buttertubs

Sorry, I do have use of a cottage. but as previous guests trashed the place. My mate is currently not letting it. I will no doubt see him in the near future and get an update.

Last conversation was I can have it whenever I want. But he is no longer letting it.

That's poor of them. We had similar in Wales a couple of years ago, the owner was nervous of letting us use it as he'd had a few stag dos trash it but Christopher convinced him we weren't Hell's Angels. Apparently we left the place cleaner and tidier than most of the families he let it to, and rolling our bikes down the hill before starting them was appreciated by the neighbours.

I always leave a place as clean as I find it and usually end up buying extra kitchen equipment!

That is the prime reason we have a permanent set of keys and just give him a bell to see if it is free, we always leave it cleaner than we find it. To the extent that he doesn't bother going up there if we have been in any more. He knew it was fit for the next guests.

I will give him a bell and ask whats the chance.

Thanks Tim. Funny people's attitudes to holiday homes. I stay every year in a place in the New Forest, this year I managed to break some mugs and glasses because the dishwasher drawer was broken so it fell out. I went out and bought replacements, then let the owner know because the next group could quite easily do the same as me if they pulled the drawer out again. I guess I could have said it wasn't my fault the items got smashed, but I treat a holiday home with more care than my own place, shoes off at the door, always use coasters for mugs, clean the grill before I leave, put the bins out. That's just good manners.
