I use my phone to take a picture of the sight glass while I'm sat on the bike.

Yes that's exactly as you would expect from a brand new modern motorcycle engine.
When I last had my AL7 in for service I was told what oil to use for top-ups but it would be very unusual for it to need any.

Bibio, Dryrob &Talkingheads - Thanks, that clarifies some things. Looks like it's doing fine without my help but I'll continue to check it weekly as part of normal routine.
Good to know how to check it quick without running the engine as well.

That is a bit harsh, I sit on bike with both feet down equally on the horizontal garage floor (I am assuming here that both my legs are same length) and use a mirror on a telescopic stick - you can get them from pound shop). Doing it by crouching down I would be tempted to use a spirit level across the bars as it is open to errors if bike is leaning slightly to one side.

I prefer to err on the side of oil being a bit high (although it doesn't seem to be using any, but I rarely explore the rev range above about 8K), and does not seem to affect gear change.

I noticed both Honda & Suzuki dealerships erred on the side of overfill too. Probably because they don't trust their customers to fill the oil between services. Especially relevant on the Honda as it was a 125 & dealers have to assume basically 0 maintenance from a 125 owner. Hasn't seemed to do any harm so far.
