Gunk, lube and rust....

Ok so im starting to pay a lil bit of love to the SV after a couple of years neglect, needless to say there is a arms length list of crap to clean up so here's a few to get started, im lookin for suggestions and tips

1. Numerous bolt heads with surface rust...How do i go about cleaning them up whilst still on the bike?.
2. Oil cooler Hoses and Guard...Is it worth replacing the hoses rather than cleaning them up?, and i wanna paint the guard, what paint should i use? i was thinking Hammerite BBQ Paint.
3. cleaning built up lube off of the back wheel and swingarm...what is the best method and products for this?
4. Perished steering top dust Seal...The Dust seal just under the top yolk is cracked and split all around the sides, now im already taking the forks off for repair so is replacing this dust seal as easy as lifting the top yolk and steering nut off the bike and sliding a new one on without having to totally overhaul (re grease) the steering bearings and such?.

Any tips and tricks will be awesome, cheers guys.

For the lube I'd use petrol and a tooth brush. Get the sprocket cover off too, it'll be caked back there

4. Yes, its that easy. You will need to readjust afterwards as disturbing adj nut.

Dont use petrol, stinky and dangerous.

2. Yes, change the hoses and BBQ paint will be fine, doesn't really need to withstand heat, but tough enough to withstand the crap coming off the front wheel

I used a tin of black aerosol paint from Poundland for the oil cooler. It is just fine - the cooler doesn't get very hot. The mesh guard I gave a coat of Hammerite silver (because I had some in the garage) to protect it before a couple of coats of Poundland black to make it the right colour.

For Nuts and bolt in-situ on the bike I use one of these in an Electric Drill with some Autosol Metal polish or similar(T-cut works well).

Cleans off the corrosion and you can get a nice polish on them.Then a light smear of ACF50 to slow down the re corrosion.

Cheers Gary.Talking of paint brushes there's an old Painter's trick we use for a degrease brush.

Get a 1"/1.5"paint brush.Wrap some masking tape around the bristles.Then chop it half way down using a box-cutter/Stanley knife.

We call it a,"Stumpy Brush" and it makes the bristles really stiff so they can dig into the grease

Loving the tips, especially the stumpy brush and the Nylon drill bit and im definitely liking the after market oil cooler hoses even if i dont need to change them, im gonna lol

probem with rusty bolt heads is that even if you get the rust off they will go rusty again very quickly unless you use something like acf50 or wax to protect them.
